Few people would be excited by the concept of a new bus maintenance hub in Los Angeles, however, Metro’s Division 13 Bus Operations and Maintenance Facility is unlike anything you would expect from a bus maintenance yard. The $120 million project at Cesar Chavez Avenue and Vignes Street opened in 2012, and from the street you see a sleek design with modern elements and an illuminated artwork that references a 400-year-old sycamore tree. The transportation building resides in front of the two story garage and is placed adjacent to the street to accommodate a need to screen operational functions while promoting a walkable, urban environment. This striking facility houses 525 employees which stands out in the local community for its environmentally sensitive elements. It has obtained LEED Gold certification.
J&M constructed site concrete elements including extensive areas of vehicular concrete, decorative pedestrian concrete paving, steps, curbs, bollard footings, ADA ramps, and truncated domes.
