Waterfront Park in downtown San Diego is a 12 acre urban park has been called the most significant public open space in San Diego’s world-renowned harbor and has also been billed as the largest San Diego urban park since the Panama California Exposition constructed in 1915.  San Diego has identified this park as the quintessential destination for residents, visitors and tourists.  The historic San Diego Administration Center Building built in 1938 is the centerpiece of this park and for many decades was surrounded by asphalt parking lots.  The creation of this park came to fruition when the County decided to eliminate surface parking by constructing a subterranean parking structure.  What was once a sea of asphalt and cars is now a urban park with an 850 foot long by 40 foot wide interactive fountain, a large civic green space, areas with intimate garden “rooms”, a children’s play zone and several picnic areas.  J&M constructed the concrete fountain structure while closely collaborating with the other contractors responsible for the fountain mechanical systems and adjacent underground parking structure.  A primary construction component on this extensive water feature is the use of J&M’s Intecrete^® and Vertical Intecrete^® concrete system.  These two innovating concrete products comprise the entire 34,000 square foot pool basin and the the 850 foot long terraced seatwall structure.  The Intecrete^® paving design was directed by the renowned landscape architectural firm of Hargreaves Associates with construction administration provided by the local San Diego landscape architectural firm of Schmidt Design Group.  The paving and walls consisted of a black hand-seeded aggregate in the fountain basin and a tan aggregate on the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the adjacent terraced walls.
